Mining Matters Episode 6: Resource Federalism and Mining: Need for Centre-State Cooperation
‘Mining Matters’ is a part of the ‘In Dialogue’ series, hosted by the Non-Fuel Minerals and Mining research team led by Rajesh Chadha, Senior Fellow at the Centre for Social and Economic Progress, New Delhi. We invite experts from India and abroad to discuss how India’s mining sector can catalyse economic growth and development, ensuring fair and sustainable mining practices for the environment and affected communities.
In the sixth episode of Mining Matters, ‘Resource Federalism and Mining: Need for Centre-State Cooperation’, S Vijay Kumar, Distinguished Fellow at TERI and the India lead of the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU) joins Karthik Bansal, Research Analyst, CSEP. The discussion highlighted the constitutional dynamics of mineral regulation in India, emphasising the need for cooperation between the Centre and State governments to foster efficient development in the sector. Challenges in incorporating diverse state perspectives during central regulation were also addressed, particularly concerning the auction system introduced in 2015, which has faced criticism for disincentivising exploration.
