The Pendency Lab
The Pendency Lab is a collaborative focused on understanding and addressing case delays in India.
The Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP) and TrustBridge Rule of Law Foundation (TrustBridge) are partnering to create a network of scholars, practitioners, and policy makers to unpack the complexity of the many challenges causing these delays.
Hear from our advisors
"Merely increasing judicial positions and improving judicial infrastructure will not solve the problem, as delays are built into the system and are related to a range of issues, including historically poorly framed rules and processes."
President, Centre for Social and Economic Progress
"Judicial Reforms are urgently needed in India, to not just maintain the legitimacy of rule of law in the country but also ensure more efficient contract enforcement. The Pendency Lab is a step in the right direction to begin a conversation on how to reform India's judiciary."
Co-author, Tareekh Pe Justice
"The Pendency Lab, a partnership between CSEP and TrustBridge, aims to build a deep, process-level understanding of why delays persist in our justice system. The initiative hopes to bring together scholars, practitioners, and policymakers across disciplines, to build granular evidence on the causes of delays that can form the basis of meaningful reform."
Managing Director, TrustBridge
"Pendency has come to define the Indian judiciary we needed to build judicial capacity yesterday. It is encouraging to see an initiative that asks the right questions. I hope it produces innovative and incisive answers."
Assistant Professor of Law, National Law School of India University
"The pendency problem in India is well recognized. And yet, there is a dearth of multi-disciplinary perspectives on its causes, consequences and ideas for reforms. Project Pendency begins to plug this gap by bringing together researchers from multiple fields - not just limited to law - in this rapidly growing field of research and advocacy in India."
