About CSEP: The Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP) conducts in-depth, policy relevant research and provides evidence-based recommendations to the challenges facing India and the world. It draws on the expertise of its researchers, extensive interactions with policy makers as well as convening power to enhance the impact of research.

Our researchers work across domains including, but not limited to, Economic Growth and Development; Energy, Natural Resources and Sustainability; and Foreign Policy and Security. All our research and policy recommendations are freely available to the public.

CSEP is based in New Delhi and registered as a company limited by shares and not for profit, under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 1956. It was earlier known as Brookings Institution India Center.

About the Property Rights Research Consortium: The Property Rights Research Consortium brings together top research institutions who take a multi-disciplinary approach to researching various aspects of property rights, land governance and housing issues in the country. As a member, we aim to contribute insightful research, build evidence, and propose solutions on important property related issues that are relevant for policy makers to truly improve the lives of people on the ground.

The project at CSEP focuses on affordable housing, social mobility, judiciary and economic progress, and strategic impact of property rights. This position is primarily for a study on gender and property rights, but you will have the opportunity to work on a variety of rigorous policy research projects as well.

About the role:

  • Assist the principal investigator, Dr. Sahil Gandhi, in proactively collecting, cleaning and processing data from identified sources.
  • Independently analyse data in Excel, Stata, and/or Python and present findings accurately and accessibly in graphs and writing.
  • Help write and edit pieces including economic analyses, working papers, and blog posts.
  • Help organize and facilitate events to provide authors early feedback on their discussion papers and reach out to various stake-holders.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • A degree in Economics, Public Policy, Sociology with quantitative analysis or similar field.
  • The candidate must be familiar with econometrics and data analysis, experience from prior employment, internship, or applicable undergraduate/graduate work will be considered.
  • Familiarity with nationally representative Indian datasets like the Indian Human Development Survey, National Family Health Survey, Rural Economic and Demographic Survey, and Agricultural Census is preferred.
  • Applicants familiar with Stata are strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with interest and experience in development economics, gender and institutional economics are preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of and passion for public policy in India.
  • Strong communication skills.

Description:

Through this project we aim to study the trends and patterns of property-related issues in India over a period of time. Given the importance of media and news in shaping public perception and influencing policy, we use a novel comprehensive dataset to study the sensitivity of media reporting on property-related events at the state as well as district level. We’re looking to conduct further research on property and land conflicts, in particular, understand how trends in media reporting compare with the true incidence of conflicts, gauge the nature of media reporting of these conflicts and explore the reasons behind the same.

Requirements:

  • Prior experience in NLP
  • Prior experience in scraping data from the web
  • Understanding of NLP techniques for text representation, semantic extraction techniques, data structures, and modelling
  • Deep understanding of text representation techniques (such as n-grams, bag of words, sentiment analysis etc), statistics and classification algorithms
  • Knowledge of Python/R
  • Experience with machine learning libraries (like scikit-learn or similar) and web scraping utilities (like bs4, urllib3, selenium, etc.)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Computational Linguistics or similar field

The Centre for Social & Economic Progress is looking for an intern to work with the Growth, Finance and Development vertical for its research on NPA in Indian Banking Sector.

About the Research on NPA in Indian Banking Sector: The ongoing research is about understanding the origin of NPA in Indian Banking Sector. This work also aims to outline policy proposals for a sound and resilient banking sector in India.

About the role:

As an intern, you will:

  • Assist the Principal Investigators in organizing the dataset and identifying topics for inquiry within the research project.
  • Independently analyse data in Excel, STATA, and R and support policy development by identifying potential policy proposals.
  • Take a lead role in drafting summaries of economic discussion papers for release as policy briefs.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Economics, Mathematics/Statistics, Public Policy, or other Social Sciences with a minor in Economics required.
  • Passion for working on public policy issues in India.
  • The candidate must be comfortable with research and quantitative data analysis including econometrics.
