Our Budget Speeches Capture the Evolution of Government Policy

The opinion piece analyses the text of the union finance ministers’ budget speeches over the last few decades to trace the evolution of government’s socioeconomic policies. The analysis shows that India’s economic policy has moved towards building more infrastructure, embracing digital innovation and rapid urbanisation, and providing better education and healthcare to its vast population. The broad goals of India’s economic policy have remained similar across party lines as the budget speeches have consistently paid attention to 8 key areas (such as infrastructure, social security, innovation, etc.).
