11:30 AM to 01:00 PM (IST)

Kanika Mahajan is an Assistant Professor in Economics at Ashoka University. Her research interests include empirical development economics with a focus on gender, agriculture, labour, and environment. As part of a Tiffin Talk on effects of alcohol sale restriction on crimes against women, she presented data on the rate and nature of criminal activity in areas with alcohol sale restrictions in Kerala. She discussed the relationship between crime, violence against women, and alcohol through theories in criminology, as well as the various state legislations against alcohol sale. While she says that a complete ban on alcohol is not effective, since it moves the entire economy underground, her findings included a decrease in crimes like harassment and assault against women in areas where alcohol sale was restricted.
