Research Analyst/Associate – Minerals and Mining

CSEP is seeking a motivated and organised Research Analyst/Associate to provide direct support to the work on India’s mining sector, energy transition, and circular economy. This role will be multidisciplinary and ideal for candidates seeking hands-on experience in academically rigorous, policy-relevant research.

The successful candidate will assist with a diverse range of research projects, including the techno-economic analysis of mining policies, critical mineral processing and supply chains, and the sustainable use of natural resources. The candidate must show a deep interest in the energy transition, responsible mineral sourcing, and the circular economy. An understanding of India’s clean energy goals will be helpful. The role will require a combination of quantitative and qualitative abilities, as well as proficient comprehension and writing skills. The role includes both research and project management responsibilities, thus strong organisational skills will be required.

Key Responsibilities

• Research Support:
  • Assist in conducting literature reviews on topics related to mining policy, critical minerals, sustainable and equitable development, energy transition, and climate policies.
  • Drafting comprehensive research outputs based on primary and secondary sources, generating key policy insights through data analysis and stakeholder consultations.
  • Analysing mineral supply chains to assess India’s current and future capacity for extraction, processing, end-use and recycling.
  • Prepare summaries and background notes on policy documents, academic papers, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Collect, clean, and manage quantitative and qualitative datasets, particularly government datasets, using tools like Microsoft Excel.
  • Contribute to the drafting and formatting of research outputs, including policy briefs, working papers, presentations, and op-eds.
  • Project-related travel for stakeholder consultations and field studies may be required.

• Project Management & Administrative Support:
  • Provide administrative and management support to ensure the smooth execution of research projects.
  • Assist with internal and external meetings with stakeholders, prepare meeting agendas, and draft minutes for circulation.
  • Help track project timelines and deliverables.

Qualifications and Skills

• Education: A degree in Economics, Public Policy, Engineering, Statistics, Geology, or a related discipline.
• Experience: 2-4 years of relevant research experience. The final title (Research Analyst or Research Associate) will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience level.
• Essential Skills:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data management and analysis.
  • Organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills are essential.
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Desirable Skills:
  • Foundational understanding of economic concepts.
  • Familiarity with India’s mining, minerals, or energy sectors, or with climate policies.
  • Experience with analytical software tools is a plus, but not a prerequisite.
