Shreekant Gupta
Shreekant Gupta is a Visiting Senior Fellow at CSEP. He has over 30 years of policy and academic experience in environmental and urban issues. He currently focuses on carbon trading, climate finance and climate change mitigation and adaptation. He is Executive Education Senior Fellow, LKY School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, Adjunct Faculty at IIIT Delhi and former Professor, Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. He has also taught at National University of Singapore, Nazarbayev University, University of Maryland and was Visiting Professor, Technical University of Munich. He received his PhD in economics from the University of Maryland and was Fulbright Fellow at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Shastri Fellow at Queens University, Canada.
Prior to joining University of Delhi, Dr Gupta was Fellow and Head, Environmental Policy Cell, National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, New Delhi. He has also worked as an economist in the Environment Department of the World Bank at Washington DC and as an economist in the Indian government (Indian Economic Service). He has served as President of the Indian Society for Ecological Economics and as Director, National Institute of Urban Affairs, New Delhi where he was involved with drafting the Master Plan for Delhi and the National Urban Renewal Mission.
His other current and past positions include Academic Council Member, University of Delhi, Executive Director, Centre for Development Economics at Delhi School of Economics, Board of Trustees, Clean Air Asia, Manila (3 terms), Founding Trustee, Centre for Civil Society, Member of Senate, IIIT Delhi and Academic Council, TERI School of Advanced Studies. He is Associate Deputy Editor of Climatic Change (a leading interdisciplinary journal on climate change) and was Associate Editor of Indian Economic Review and Singapore Economic Review. His academic research has been published in peer reviewed journals including Climate Change Economics, Climate Policy, Ecological Economics, The Lancet (Planetary Health), Land Economics, The RAND Journal of Economics and World Development. His consulting experience includes ADB, OECD, World Bank, UNDP and UNEP.
Dr Gupta has served on the Economic Options Committee of the Montreal Protocol and was Lead Author, Sixth Assessment Report and Coordinating Lead Author, Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 and to which his contribution was recognized.
