Research Associate – Foreign Policy and Security Studies

The Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP) is looking to hire a Research Associate for The Africa Research Alliance (TARA), a development-oriented research hub within its Foreign Policy and Security Studies vertical, dedicated to Africa.

The ideal candidate will have strong research aptitude and entrepreneurial drive. They will focus on emerging priority areas including cooperation in critical minerals, strengthening digital partnerships, and health diplomacy.

The candidate will play a vital role in supporting evidence-based research to advance scholarly and policy understanding in the fields of international relations and foreign policy. They are expected to conduct thorough literature reviews, synthesise information from diverse sources, create relevant datasets, carry out stakeholder mapping, and support programmatic coordination for non-research activities. This includes tasks such as organising conferences, webinars, and interviews with key stakeholders and experts.

CSEP provides unique opportunities to work in a collaborative environment with researchers and experts in India, the region, and the world. We work with in-house, national and global experts, and regularly interact with stakeholders including industry and policymakers.

Educational Background:

  • A graduate/post-graduate degree in international relations, African Studies, political science, or a related field is required.

Professional Experience:

  • 2-4 years of relevant experience is preferred, but candidates with strong academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. 

Knowledge and Expertise:

  • Strong understanding of international relations theories, geopolitics, and global affairs.
  • A focus or interest in African Affairs is highly desirable.
  • Experience with qualitative research and analysis; familiarity with quantitative data analysis is an advantage.

Communication Skills:

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to contribute effectively to reports, memos, and presentations.
  • Capable of communicating complex ideas clearly and succinctly to diverse audiences.

Organisational Skills:

  • Meticulous attention to detail, with strong organizational abilities to coordinate events like stakeholder roundtables and interviews.
  • Skilled in handling communications on behalf of a team while maintaining professionalism and clarity.

Teamwork and Motivation:

  • A professional, respectful, and solutions-oriented attitude is essential. The role demands clear communication, openness to feedback, and a collegial approach.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and proactively contribute to advancing team goals.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment where flexibility and an entrepreneurial drive are key.
  • Strong time management skills, with the capacity to balance multiple tasks effectively, including research and administrative responsibilities.
  • Highly motivated, proactive, and eager to build relationships with key stakeholders in the research and policy landscape.
