About the paper: India has made pledges to mitigate the impending climate change crisis, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the Nationally Determined Contributions to the UNFCCC and launching various missions under the National Action Plan for Climate Change. A common link between these goals is converting fossil-fuel-based technology to newer and more efficient green technology solutions. Since India currently relies on imports to meet these needs, domestic extraction and manufacturing abilities must be enhanced. However, despite India’s vast mineral geological potential, there would still be a need to import raw materials to meet the manufacturing needs. Thus, there is an urgent requirement to incentivise domestic exploration, extraction, and processing. Some of these minerals include silicon (for solar PVs), lithium (for electric vehicles), rare earth elements (for wind turbines), and nickel (for nuclear reactors).

The Non-Fuel Minerals and Mining research team at CSEP has been working on identifying India’s critical mineral needs today and over the next two decades, which accounts for the bulk of the country’s green transition. The research measures the economic importance of the minerals and their associated global supply risks, and projects India’s manufacturing sector needs for critical minerals in 2040. The goal is to provide policymakers with a clear picture of India’s most critical minerals and its green transition and what must be done to guarantee their continuous supply.
